SLRD Announces Action Plan for the Corridor Trails Service
Squamish Lillooet Regional District - Trail Coordinators
The SLRD Board is pleased to announce that the contract for completion of an Action Plan for the Corridor Trails Service has been awarded to Catalyst Community and Resort Planning of Whistler, British Columbia. This is an important next step in development of a regional trials service for corridor residents and visitors alike.
The team of Caroline and Grant Lamont will be working with stakeholder groups from Porteau Cove to D’Arcy to identify the best way to manage tenures and legitimize recreational trails in the corridor in accordance with the Sea to Sky Corridor Trail Strategy and its long range goals, which are:
1. An Authorized Trail Network
2. A Coordinated Trail Network
3. An Environmentally Responsive Trail Network
4. A Sustainable and Economically Beneficial Trail Network
These four long term goals will be realized by carrying out identified strategies to achieve more specific objectives.
Of the approximately 710 km. of known recreational trails outside of B.C. Parks, in the Sea to Sky Corridor, 551 km. or 77% are located on Crown Land. Only 17 trails, accounting for approximately 117 km, are authorized or established under the Forest and Range Practices Act.
This plan endeavours to provide strategic direction to responsible authorities and other key stakeholders for the authorization and management of recreational trails on provincial crown land within the Corridor. Since trails often cross multiple jurisdiction boundaries and are enjoyed by a diverse range of users, this plan can only prove effective if a coordinated and cooperative approach is taken by all interested parties including local government agencies and user groups.
Russ Oakley, SLRD Chair:
“The Board is looking forward to taking a leading role in the management of this key recreational resource. Stakeholder input and cooperative planning will be the key to keeping our trails safe, protected, and environmentally sustainable.”

B.C.'s deputy chief electoral officer is asking residents around the lower mainland to consider working with Elections BC as district electoral officers and deputy district electoral officers to manage election preparedness and the administration of the May 2009 general election and referendum on electoral reform.
"Elections BC looks for leaders in all B.C. communities, including those in the lower mainland, to help us deliver the electoral process," Elections BC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Linda Johnson said. "Having people from area communities hold these key leadership positions ensures we take advantage of local knowledge during these very important events."
District electoral officers and deputy district electoral officers prepare and distribute materials and supplies and provide information and services to the general public, political parties and candidates. They receive, check and acknowledge receipt of nomination papers and arrange for the printing of voters lists and ballots. They are also responsible for ensuring the accessibility of voting opportunities including advance voting, mobile voting and general voting day operations.
"We would really like to hear from residents of the lower mainland who are interested in this work," Johnson added. "The district electoral officer positions will appeal to retired or semi-retired individuals who have management or leadership experience. Availability for training and part-time work is necessary during 2008. Full-time election-readiness operations will begin in April 2009."
Elections BC provides remuneration for these opportunities. The deadline for applying is Jan. 31. For more information on the Elections BC positions, visit the employment link at www.elections.bc.ca or call Elections BC at 1-800-661-8683.

As we all hopefully know, potatoes are a vital part of the Pemberton Valley community.
In 1967, the Pemberton Valley became the first commercial seed potato area in the world to grow virus-free seed potatoes.
The Valley’s natural isolation created by the surrounding mountains, plus careful crop monitoring, helps to ensure the continuing success of this industry. Using "clean" seed potatoes grown in the Valley helps reduce the amount of pesticides and other chemicals used to harvest this agricultural product.
Learn more about the Year of the Potato by watching the video below and by visiting the Year of the Potato website.

Olympic Flame Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay in Pemberton
Members of Pemberton encouraged to apply for chance to run with Olympic Flame
Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay to stop in Pemberton on February 6, 2010
PEMBERTON – Imagine holding aloft the gleaming white torch carrying the Olympic Flame, running with it as the flame unfurls in the wind and passing by friends, family and community members of Pemberton as they look on with pride and awe.
Anyone can be a torchbearer in the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay from high school athletes to grandmothers, from regular folk to community activists and thousands more Canadians, including people from Pemberton, are needed to apply as soon as possible. The relay, which starts October 30 in Victoria, BC, is presented by Coca-Cola and RBC and supported by the Government of Canada.
“Seeing and holding that magnificent Olympic Flame is a transformational and emotional experience,” said John Furlong, VANOC’s Chief Executive Officer. “This is a very special opportunity for Canada’s communities from coast to coast to coast to participate in the Olympic Torch Relay so I encourage everyone to apply. The Olympic Flame truly symbolizes the best in all of us.”
Both programs invite Canadians to share a brief story about how they plan to make themselves, their community or their country a better place.
The Olympic Flame will visit Pemberton on February 6, 2010 as one of approximately 1,020 communities during its 106-day journey across the country. The torch relay will visit every province and territory, including Canada's most northern, southern and eastern points, before arriving back in the host province of British Columbia for the start of the Games on February 12, 2010.
Each of the 12,000 torchbearers selected for the relay will receive a brand-new torch to carry the Olympic Flame for their part of the journey. The individual torches, manufactured by Bombardier, may be purchased by the torchbearer after their run to pass down as a family heirloom. The torchbearers will also receive a complete torchbearer uniform, designed by the Hudson’s Bay Company, consisting of a jacket, pullover pants, toque and knitted red mittens. The winter white uniforms with bright bursts of blue and green feature the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay emblem on the chest and the universally recognizable Olympic Rings on the back. The uniforms are a commemorative keepsake for the torchbearers to remind them of their part in the historic journey.
Already, several torchbearers have been announced by Coke and RBC, including: Caleb Taylor, 35, of Regina, who teaches hockey to inner-city youth; environmental activist Sue McLennan of Quebec; 16-year-old soccer enthusiast Catherine Charron-Delage of Longueuil, Que., and Katie Willoughby, 14, of Port Williams, NS., who plays soccer and volleyball.
The Whistler Chamber of Commerce (WCC) is working closely with the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW), VANOC and other Resort partners and its membership to ensure that Whistler businesses successfully realize the opportunities that the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games offer.
A survey has been developed to collect information on your employees’ commuter needs during the period February 1-28, 2010. The survey results will allow BC Transit to develop the commuter bus schedules between Squamish–Whistler and Pemberton-Whistler during Games time.
You may not have finalized your employee and/or shift needs. However, we encourage you to provide us with your best estimate of those needs at this time so that planning can move forward.
To start the survey, click here. Please respond by May 29, 2009.
