February 6, 2010 — A Very Big Day!

Members of Pemberton encouraged to apply for chance to run with Olympic Flame

On February 6, 2010 at approximately 8 a.m. The 2010 Olympic Torch will make its way through Pemberton.

"Seeing and holding that magnificent Olympic Flame is a transformational and emotional experience," said John Furlong, VANOC’s Chief Executive Officer. "This is a very special opportunity for Canada’s communities from coast to coast to coast to participate in the Olympic Torch Relay so I encourage everyone to apply. The Olympic Flame truly symbolizes the best in all of us."

February 6th is Pemberton’s time to show the world our future athletes, and our community spirit.

We all have a flame burning inside of us, and The Games are a prime example of reaching goals, and caring for that flame.

As a community, we need to encourage Pembertonians to become torchbearers. The exhilaration, and memories created from that 300 meters will last a lifetime.

Time is running out to apply to become a torchbearer. Visit www.iCoke.ca or www.rbc.com/carrythetorch to apply.

Whether you are young, or young at heart; everyone should all have the opportunity to become a part of history.

Would you like to join the Torch Relay Committee?

Contact Michelle at mich.murray@live.com for the next meeting date!

Got spirit?

T-Shirts will also be available at the Visitors Centre.

The Nominees are In!

The Spirit of BC Committee along with members of the Torch Committee have nominated three incredibly worthy Pembertonians to carry the Torch and represent Pemberton. These individuals are:

Heather Kelly

Paul Selina

Jim McDonald

Each nominee shows the true spirit of the Olympic flame. And we are honoured to share their spirit with the world.

Olympic Flame Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay in Pemberton

Members of Pemberton encouraged to apply for chance to run with Olympic Flame
Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay to stop in Pemberton on February 6, 2010

PEMBERTON – Imagine holding aloft the gleaming white torch carrying the Olympic Flame, running with it as the flame unfurls in the wind and passing by friends, family and community members of Pemberton as they look on with pride and awe.

Anyone can be a torchbearer in the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay from high school athletes to grandmothers, from regular folk to community activists and thousands more Canadians, including people from Pemberton, are needed to apply as soon as possible. The relay, which starts October 30 in Victoria, BC, is presented by Coca-Cola and RBC and supported by the Government of Canada.

“Seeing and holding that magnificent Olympic Flame is a transformational and emotional experience,” said John Furlong, VANOC’s Chief Executive Officer. “This is a very special opportunity for Canada’s communities from coast to coast to coast to participate in the Olympic Torch Relay so I encourage everyone to apply. The Olympic Flame truly symbolizes the best in all of us.”

Interested torchbearer candidates from Pemberton may apply at www.iCoke.ca or www.rbc.com/carrythetorch.

Both programs invite Canadians to share a brief story about how they plan to make themselves, their community or their country a better place.

The Olympic Flame will visit Pemberton on February 6, 2010 as one of approximately 1,020 communities during its 106-day journey across the country. The torch relay will visit every province and territory, including Canada's most northern, southern and eastern points, before arriving back in the host province of British Columbia for the start of the Games on February 12, 2010.

Each of the 12,000 torchbearers selected for the relay will receive a brand-new torch to carry the Olympic Flame for their part of the journey. The individual torches, manufactured by Bombardier, may be purchased by the torchbearer after their run to pass down as a family heirloom. The torchbearers will also receive a complete torchbearer uniform, designed by the Hudson’s Bay Company, consisting of a jacket, pullover pants, toque and knitted red mittens. The winter white uniforms with bright bursts of blue and green feature the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay emblem on the chest and the universally recognizable Olympic Rings on the back. The uniforms are a commemorative keepsake for the torchbearers to remind them of their part in the historic journey.

Already, several torchbearers have been announced by Coke and RBC, including: Caleb Taylor, 35, of Regina, who teaches hockey to inner-city youth; environmental activist Sue McLennan of Quebec; 16-year-old soccer enthusiast Catherine Charron-Delage of Longueuil, Que., and Katie Willoughby, 14, of Port Williams, NS., who plays soccer and volleyball.

Further information on the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay is available online at www.vancouver2010.com/torchrelay.

GAMES TOWN 2010 - PEMBERTON TO WIN GOLD!

The Province of British Columbia announced in late February, an initiative to promote healthy living, and Olympic and community spirit.

Premier Gordon Campbell has said about GamesTown 2010; "In just under one year's time, our province will be hosting the world for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. GamesTown 2010 is a great way for all communities in our province to participate in the excitement leading up to the Games."

This is a great way to showcase Pemberton; as well as our healthy living lifestyle. Community entries will be judged on: the creativity and enthusiasm of their submissions; a variety of healthy living and environmental sustainability criteria, such as the level of community engagement at recreation facilities and in amateur sports; the community's participation in the World Healthy Living Challenge; its commitment to environmental sustainability initiatives; and how active the community is in incorporating the Olympic and Paralympic theme in its current activities and plans for the year ahead.

The Gold Medal prize is $100,000 to be used to update an existing recreational facility, or build towards a new one. There are also Silver, and Bronze Medal prizes of $50,000 and $25,000.

We as a community need to spread the word about this terrific event. Pass this release along to anyone in the community you feel would be interested. There are a lot of prizes to give away, and exposure to our community.

For more information please go to www.gamestown2010.ca, there is already a profile created for Pemberton, and all we have to do is keep adding stories!

ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY

Chamber members are encouraged to participate in an advertising opportunity which speaks directly to visitors when they are making a decision to travel and stay in our community.

Resort TV is producing for the 5th season the "Discover Pemberton" video which plays to the 1.2 million summer visitors staying in the 5,000+ hotel and condo rooms in Whistler.
