Meet the Member: The English Test Agency
Behind every test score is a story — of ambition, determination, and the pursuit of a better future. For many English language learners preparing for the CELPIP test, success isn’t just about passing an exam; it’s about opening doors to new opportunities in Canada.
But while study materials are widely available, one crucial piece is often missing: clear, personalised feedback that shows learners exactly how to improve.
That’s where The English Test Agency comes in. Built from real classroom experience and a deep understanding of students’ needs, this growing business is helping test-takers gain the confidence, clarity, and skills they need to achieve their goals.
We spoke with the founder to learn more about how it all began, the challenges of growing a niche service, and the impact their work is having on individuals and the wider community.
Tell us a little about your business! What products or services do you offer, and who are your customers?
The English Test Agency offers professional, personalized marking and feedback for people preparing for the CELPIP test — the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program.
Clients submit their practice writing and speaking tasks through the website and receive detailed, friendly feedback that explains their errors, suggests corrections, and points them toward the right resources to improve.
Their customers are adult ESL learners working toward Canadian residency or professional licensing. These are motivated individuals whose CELPIP scores truly matter. Many don’t have the time or budget for traditional English lessons, so this service provides a practical and effective alternative.
All submissions are assessed using the same rigorous standards as the official test, ensuring clients understand exactly where they stand and how to improve.
Why did you decide to start your business? How did it transition from an idea or hobby to a full-fledged business?
The English Test Agency was born out of a clear gap in available resources.
As an English language teacher, the founder noticed students frequently using lesson time for CELPIP feedback because there simply wasn’t anywhere else to get meaningful insights. The official CELPIP platform offered little in terms of estimated scores or detailed guidance, and very few alternatives existed.
Determined to solve this problem, the founder began building the platform during COVID, collaborating with local voice actors, friends, and family to create content and prepare for launch.
What started as a passion project gradually evolved into a fully operational business — one that now offers something rare in the market: real, expert feedback from a teacher, not an AI, complete with accurate scoring and actionable advice.
What is the biggest challenge you face in operating your business?
Our biggest challenge currently is visibility.
As a small business with a modest marketing budget, reaching the right audience is an ongoing effort. CELPIP candidates are a highly specific group, often located overseas and navigating the immigration process, which makes them difficult to reach through traditional local marketing channels.
While word-of-mouth has proven powerful once clients discover the service, getting in front of new users remains the primary hurdle. Opportunities to connect with the community and raise awareness are therefore incredibly valuable.
What is the greatest reward you experience from running your business?
The most rewarding part is knowing the service has made a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
Our clients aren’t just studying English casually. They’re working toward life-changing goals like visas or professional licenses. When someone shares that the feedback helped them achieve the score they needed, it’s deeply fulfilling.
Having personally experienced language testing and visa applications, the founder understands the stakes involved. This personal connection makes every submission more than just work - it represents a real person with a goal, and being part of that journey is incredibly meaningful.
How do you see your business contributing to the local community?
The business plays a small but meaningful role in supporting immigration - a cornerstone of the local community.
The Sea to Sky corridor and surrounding areas are home to people from all over the world, many of whom are working hard to build permanent lives in Canada. Passing the CELPIP test is often a critical step in that journey.
By helping individuals achieve their required scores, The English Test Agency contributes to a broader ripple effect: people are able to stay, work, raise families, and enrich the community with their cultures, skills, and experiences.
Clients are not just customers - they are neighbours, colleagues, and friends. Supporting their success feels like a natural and important contribution to the community.
