“Keeping Our Rich History Alive”

Meet the Member: Pemberton Museum & Archives Society!

Have you ever wondered about the history behind our museum here in Pemberton—and the society that brings it to life? In this Meet the Member feature, we’re highlighting the Pemberton & District Museum and Archives Society to explore who they are, what they do, what inspired their creation, and the important role they play in preserving our community’s story.

Tell us a little about your organization! What does your organization do, and who does it serve?

The museum collects, preserves, displays, and shares artifacts, photographs, archives, and stories connected to the history of Pemberton and its surrounding district. Our work is guided by a commitment to engaging, insightful, inclusive, and respectful storytelling. Beyond preserving history, the museum produces community events and opens its spaces for public use, hosting gatherings, celebrations, workshops, and special occasions. We serve the Pemberton valley community and warmly welcome visitors from around the world.

What inspired the founding of your organization?

The story begins in 1967, when three local women set out to research and write the book, Pemberton: The History of a Settlement. Their goal was to capture the rapidly changing life of the community, documenting both settler families and the enduring presence of Lil’wat Nation. This research grew into a collection of heritage buildings, artifacts, photographs, and archival documents, eventually leading to the formation of the museum society in 1982. How did it transition from an idea to a fully established entity? From those early research efforts, the museum expanded gradually. Volunteers collected artifacts, restored heritage buildings, and developed archives, creating a space where the community could connect with its past. Over time, the museum grew into a fully operational heritage site, offering exhibitions, educational programming, and community events, while maintaining its mission of preserving the region’s stories for future generations.

How does your organization contribute to our local Sea to Sky Community?

The museum is a living bridge between past and present. Through exhibitions, site tours, educational programs, and public access to archives, it connects residents and visitors to the people, cultures, and industries that have shaped the valley. Its spaces also serve as a gathering place for the community, hosting performances, workshops, celebrations, and other shared experiences. In doing so, the museum strengthens community connections while keeping local history relevant and meaningful.

What is the biggest challenge your organization faces?

Balancing growth with limited resources is an ongoing challenge. Caring for heritage buildings, maintaining a growing collection, producing events, welcoming visitors, and providing spaces for community gatherings all require staff time, volunteers, funding, and ongoing maintenance. The museum also faces the task of keeping heritage relevant in a rapidly changing region, with rising costs, shifting demographics, and evolving community needs.

How has your organization evolved since its founding?

From a small volunteer-led effort documenting local history, the museum has grown into a vibrant heritage site with historic buildings, curated exhibitions, extensive archives, and a full calendar of public programming.

Any last words or key messages you'd like to share about your organization?

We care for the past while looking ahead, ensuring that the stories of this place continue to grow with each generation. Through stewardship, collaboration, and shared experiences, the museum remains a living part of the community it serves, a welcoming place to gather for team-building activities, meetings, and special events.

With flexible spaces and optional experiences like scavenger hunts and guided tours, it’s an easy way to bring people together in a setting that feels both relaxed and inspiring.
